Plastische Vormgeving (Plastic Form) shows a stylised female figure and exemplifies Poels’ formal language, which he later often applied to animal studies and folkloristic themes.
A small-scale bronze version of this work from his cubist period, created in the early 1930s, also exists. The stone sculpture was installed in 1982 in the green space opposite Poels’ home in Borgerhout, where a commemorative plaque was also placed after his death in 1984.
Albert Poels (1903-1984) was a prolific sculptor, medallist and jewellery designer. He studied at the Municipal Academy of Berchem and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. Initially active in his father’s workshop, he later developed into a versatile artist.
