Details

De pied à pied (Foot to Foot) by Guy Woueté was created in 2024 and is located at the intersection of Spillemansstraat and Herman Van den Reeckstraat in Borgerhout, Antwerp. The artwork consists of two enlarged bronze feet placed side by side on a round plinth in the grass. The right foot, firmly booted, conveys authority, security and strength, but also suggests violence and danger. The left foot is free, bare and vulnerable.

The sculptures invite reflection on the balance between power and powerlessness, oppression and resilience. They recall the enormous responsibility of those in power and the importance of living together in tolerance. With this work, the artist also aims to cast a critical eye on colonial history and to encourage us to continue striving for collective well-being and never accept social injustice.

Guy Woueté (b. 1980) lives and works in Antwerp and Douala. He studied sculpture and painting in Douala and Brussels and was a resident at the Rijksakademie of Fine Arts in Amsterdam.
