Ohne Titel (Untitled) is an ensemble of three bronze sculptures. Their recognizable form, that of transport pallets, evokes the history of the port city and its former docks along the Vlaamse- and Waalsekaai: Steendok, Kooldok, and Schippersdok. From the late 19th century until the docks were filled up in 1969, this area bustled with the loading and unloading of goods. Today, the site has been transformed into an urban park, where Ohne Titel has found a permanent home since 2024. The sculptures appear as if left behind in time. At the same time, the pallet motif continues to suggest motion and activity – just as residents and visitors keep crossing through the park, becoming part of the city’s vibrant rhythm.

Lohaus produced relatively few works in bronze. Ohne Titel therefore occupies a special place within his oeuvre. The placement of the work is inspired not only by the industrious past of the docks but also by the life of the artist, whose home and studio were located nearby on the Vlaamsekaai.

Bernd Lohaus (1940–2010) was a German sculptor who lived and worked in Antwerp from 1966 onward. The post-industrial landscape of the river Scheldt quays in the 1970s and ’80s was a major source of inspiration for his work. He made use of simple, raw materials such as wooden beams, stone, and rope. His oeuvre is closely tied to the port city of Antwerp, particularly the Zuid district, where he translated the movement of people, goods, and ideas into material form.

This monumental sculpture is perfectly integrated into the park landscape. Heavy discarded wooden beams from the harbor lie level on a slope. Together they straighten the sloping grass lawn. All peace and quiet. Yet the pointed ends nevertheless indicate a direction.
