Details

In de schaduw van je glimlach (In the shadow of your smile), a 1980 artwork by Pol Spilliaert, is carved in bluestone and located along Burgemeester Leon Cornettepad in Merksem.

The clean, minimal forms of this sculpture highlight the material itself and allow the sculpture to blend into its surroundings. Its lyrical title leaves ample space for interpretation: is it a human figure, a tree, or a fantastical form? The work was purchased following the first Merksem Biennale of Sculpture in 1980.

Pol Spilliaert (1935–2023) was a sculptor known for his abstract works and thematic focus on the relationship between man and woman. He studied sculpture at the Ter Kameren Institute in Brussels and was awarded several prestigious prizes, including the Godecharle Prize for sculpture in 1959.

We see an accumulation of more or less spherical volumes in pink Portuguese marble. Though structure is not symmetrical, it is balanced. At the same time, the spherical volumes are bursting with energy. They seem to detach themselves from the whole to lead a life of their own. Pol Spilliaert invites us to discover the relationships between the parts: between bottom and top, right and left, front and back.
