This monument commemorates lawyer and liberal politician Evarist Allewaert, who was also alderman for education in Antwerp from 1872 to 1889. It was designed and created by sculptor Frans Joris in 1890 and is located in Antwerp’s Stadspark.
The monument was originally designed as a memorial for Allewaert's grave, but was subsequently adapted into a stand-alone monument that was unveiled in the Stadspark, followed by a grand procession of pupils from Antwerp's municipal schools. Striking details include the marble books on which Allewaert's bust rests, as well as the two bronze figures of children at the foot of the monument. These refer to the alderman's important role in municipal schools, which he strengthened and expanded with the progressive Fröbel nursery schools.
Frans Joris (1851–1914) is known for his numerous monuments and portrait busts. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. From 1883 onwards, he also taught at the Academy.
