This monumental sculpture pays tribute to Belgian painter Baron Henry Leys, known for his historical and genre paintings. Immediately after his death, the City of Antwerp decided to erect a memorial to honour his contribution to Belgian art.

Joseph-Jacques Ducaju (1823–1891) was a Belgian sculptor and architect. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp and was renowned for his monumental works and portraits.
